Getting Air Conditioner Ready For Summer

The best time to get your air conditioner ready for summer is not in the heat of summer, but in early spring while the temperatures are still pleasant.

Let’s first look at how an air conditioner system works. There are basically three main parts of your central air system: The condenser, the blower and the delivery of the air through a duct work system. The condenser is the unit that is outside of your home. It helps to take the warm air and turn it into cooler air. Once it reaches the blower unit from the condenser it turns into cooler air and is blown through a balance duct work system throughout your home.

Things you can do to get prepared for summer use with your air conditioning system:

• Change your air filter. Air filters should be changed on a regular basis, at least every couple of months. Restricted air flow, due to a dirty filter, causes your system to work harder, thus costing more in energy costs.
• Check your condensate-removal system. This is located where your blower is located. The purpose it serves is to remove condensation ) moisture from the system. The moisture drains into a pan or drain. Make sure that the line is clear and the pan is drained.
• Clear or trim debris or bushes from around your outside condenser unit. It should have about 2 feet clearance from around the unit.
• Check all your duct work registers, making sure that there is nothing obstructing the airflow through the registers. You should have your ducts cleaned by a professional every couple of years.
